Giant Eagle Apple Pistachio Salad


Most recently, a food recall occurred. Giant Eagle has issued a recall of Giant Eagle Apple Pistachio Salad, and the same salad with Chicken, due to the fact that the red apples recalled by Del Monte Fresh Produce due to Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Even though to date, Giant Eagle hasn’t received any reports of customer illnesses, there are risks of customer illness. Particularly, young children, frail/elderly people/ and others, with weak immune systems are at risk. However, even healthy individuals can suffer from short term symptoms, such as a high fever, headaches, stifness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. In addition, in pregnant women, listeria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

This recall is being done to samples of red apples, produced by Del Monte, tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. The FDA was notified about this on December 9th, 2014. These items have been sold in Pennsylvania, and Ohio Giant Eagles locations from 11/29, through 12/9. This product has a sell-date of 12/1 to 12/11. Upon notification by Del Monte, Giant Eagle removed many of the potentially affected products, but some could have been distributed, resulting in some becoming sick.
